Buying a Pram Newborn

Prams and pushchairs are the multi-functional, flexible partners of caregivers and parents. They're the co-pilots of the new journey of your child.

A pram newborn is designed for newborns and babies and has an incredibly sturdy, deep carrycot with soft and secure walls.

A pram is equipped with a bassinet, but it can be converted to a stroller once the baby is ready.

Safety

Newborns should be protected as much as possible. A stroller or pram equipped with safety features will ensure that your baby is in a safe and comfortable environment during travel. The essential requirements for any stroller or pram include a functioning brake, a five-point safety harness (2 shoulder straps, two waist straps, and a crotch strap) and the wrist tether strap that is for the person who is pushing the pram. Make sure the pram you choose meets these standards.

Find a pram that allows your newborn to ride in the recommended lie-flat position. This position supports the baby and prevents the risk of a dangerous curve in the spine which can cause spinal problems. By keeping the airways open, it lowers the chance of SUID (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Asphyxiation). Most sale prams that are used from birth will include a seat unit that will recline to a lay-flat pram mode for babies younger than the age of one and transform into a pushchair unit for older children.

The suspension on a pram is important because it affects how smooth the ride is. A pram with lots of spring suspension will be more expensive, but it is worth the extra expense in the event that you plan to use your pram each day for a few years or more.

Always read the instructions and carefully read the warning labels on your pram or stroller. You should also make sure that your pram is parked in a safe location away from bicycles, traffic or any other dangers when it isn't being used. It is also important to remove any bags or other items from the handles, since they can cause your baby to become caught or suffocate.

Even if the baby is asleep, it's not an ideal idea to leave a pram or stroller unattended. They may squirm into the pram and get trapped, or it could roll away and cause injury. Hanging bags or other items on the handles isn't recommended because they could fall and strike your child on the head.

Comfort

Possibility of lying flat seating is an absolute must for newborns, as it promotes better back and lung development. A lot of prams come with a cocoon or carrycot that creates a cosy, nest-like environment for your baby and is able to be removed from the frame. Others, like the egg2's bucket-style seat, don't recline to lie flat but still provide a comfy ride for your baby.

Some prams have a separate bassinet or seat for the newborn. This allows you to easily switch between sleeping and sitting positions depending on the needs of your baby. This is often called a 'travel system and is the very first option you should test with your baby.

Look for a pram with two straps for the shoulder, ideally padded, and a five-point safety harness. It should fit your baby's body perfectly. Be sure that there aren't any gaps or areas that are loose in which fingers can get caught and that the buckles are easy to use, especially for older children. It's also worth considering whether you'd prefer a parent facing pram or not - it's great to watch your little one and helps them feel secure by the familiar sight of their parents.

Convenience

When buying a pram newborn it is important to consider your baby's needs for transport. Some prams include the option of a carrycot or bassinet which allow your baby to lay flat (essential for their development of their spine and breathing) while others have a seat that can recline to a lie-flat position. It is important to check out the other accessories the pram has, such as an infant changing bag and a footmuff which are essential to keep your baby warm in colder weather.

It's also worth noting that some prams and strollers can be converted into travel systems, permitting you to connect a car capsule to the frame using adaptors, to allow you to easily transfer your child between the car and the pushchair without needing to wake them up. These are useful if you have a busy schedule or don't have the big enough boot for prams, however it is worth bearing in mind that your child must be old enough and able to sit up independently before you can change between the car capsule and pram for newborn.

Another feature to consider is the possibility of raising and lowering your newborn's seat from a low to high setting, which allows you to maintain eye contact with them and keeps them close to you, something that our parent tester found very useful for her 10-month old boy! An excellent example is the Graco Near2Me, which can be lowered to allow your baby to glide towards you by pressing the button, and remain in constant eye contact.

Finally, make sure your pram newborn has a sturdy base and wheels that can handle potholes and bumps. Also, make sure you are able to fold it up easily, and check that the safety harness you use is safe, fits comfortably and securely (five-point rather than three-point) and is adjustable as your child grows. You should also be able put your shopping bags and changing bags in the basket underneath (although be aware that loading the twin pram with too much weight can cause it to tip over).
