Evolution Korea

Until recently the scientific community in Korea has refrained from engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so could give the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer a viable option.

The STR has been battling to get rid of textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which may result in changes to genes or entire genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how people with advantageous traits are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less advantageous traits. This variation in reproduction could be a catalyst to the creation and evolution of new species.

The word "evolution" is derived from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed in both science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process in which living organisms develop traits to increase their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. As time passes the genetic variability could result in the development of entirely new physical or biological functions in the population. This shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary change. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed on to the next generation.

Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial, despite the fact that it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and it has been tested over time. They argue that the theory shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in textbooks for high school. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the elimination of textbook content on the evolution of horses and the Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

While these are troubling developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support vary. Some scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions, such as developing treatments or developing new medicines, while others are driven by the desire to improve the lives of animals and plant species, generally for the benefit of humans. OECs are not as well-known However, they're just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is an untruth.

Both types of creationism reject that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life came to be on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought resisted miracles because they feared they might lose their credibility.

STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and members. The goal, according to STR is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an unflattering image for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that half of them did not believe evolution. The root causes are unclear but could be due to religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and an ebook. One of these was a textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. This led to an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 7 and 8, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
