There are models that mop and charge themselves, which is a feature important for families with pets or children. Many of the top performers in our tests offer decent obstacle-avoiding capabilities.

1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling, the i3 EVO. They differ only in that the i3+ comes with self-emptying capabilities. That makes the i3+ an excellent option for those who want a hands-off, fully automated cleaning experience, but aren't afraid of having to empty their dust bin manually as it gets full.

Both robots are adept at picking up surface debris on carpets and hard floors, and they are very good in maneuvering around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates intelligent maps of your home that help the i3+ EVO to navigate and clean in a manner that maximizes efficiency. The i3+ does not have obstacle avoidance capabilities like the i7+ or other top-rated robots that we test. It may get stuck on power cords or socks and have difficulty navigating between surfaces, such as rug and hardwood.

iRobot recommends that you tidy the area around the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes putting away any toys or clutter it might come across. It's also an excellent idea to keep the dust bin and filter clean so that they do not become blocked by dirt. When the i3+'s internal bin is full or its battery is depleted it goes back to its docking station and automatically emptying its dirt into the station's external dustbin and continues cleaning where it began. The i3+ EVO's battery lasts for about an hour and a half of continuous use. It takes about three hours to fully recharge.

2. Roomba from iRobot

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the most powerful model of the flagship line from iRobot and comes with all the latest features. It's self-charging and self-navigating. the most crucial feature of all -- it has an auto-emptying dustbin, which eliminates one of the main sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ can keep up to 10 floor plans and their names thanks to Imprint Smart Mapping, a system that lets it map rooms so it can clean smart robot them more efficiently. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and control your robot with voice or through the app.

The i7+ is quicker and more agile in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also cleaned large pet hair pieces from all surfaces including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying bin, which removes major maintenance sources and reduces the cost of maintenance.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We used these services to instruct the robot on how to start, stop, or pause cleaning sessions as well as move around the room, and to vacuum a particular area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ to these services. Once connected we were able to use the i7+'s voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options to manage i7+ settings and evaluating the performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is a sports car in a world of vacuums powered by cordless that resemble minivans and buses. It's powerful and has features to replace a stand-up vacuum for the majority of households, but it also fits in well next to a coffee table or on the bookshelf, where you can wave it around like a magic tool.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell high-energy lithium-ion battery that can provide energy that is not faded for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filtration system traps allergens and releases clean air back into your home. The specialized head uses rigid nylon bristles to penetrate into carpets, and then pick up large crumbs or fine dust. It comes with three suction modes to meet the task at hand. It can quickly switch from handheld to floor vacuum and vice versa.

This model also has an accessory dock that can charge to 100% in 3.5 hours and offers easy access to two attachments and a clip for a wand. This is a big improvement over earlier Dysons models, that require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its sluggish run time. Its marketing claims that it has up to 60 minutes of running time are not true as CR's tests show. This is a common, not exceptional, battery-powered cordless vacuum's running time. It's enough time to vacuum the average-sized home but not enough to reach every area. (A second time usually works). This doesn't mean that this model doesn't have its benefits: It's lighter and mobile than the older cordless Dysons and its vacuuming performance is significantly superior on carpets with a low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

The 694 is a basic robotic vacuum cleaner commercial vacuum that's a great choice for those who don't have a lot of money to invest in the latest model of robot. It could pick up most types of debris and sizes during our tests and would often go over the same area several times to ensure a thorough clean. Its flat front makes it possible to reach corners and edges of walls.

Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate your home, but it's not equipped with the ability to map that comes with more sophisticated models like our top selections and the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. As a result, it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords and low furniture, and it frequently runs out of battery power before returning to its original location.

The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in many ways, as it has fewer components that need regular cleaning and is equipped with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, has lower recurring costs, has more advanced automation capabilities and is better at moving itself. It also has a larger dustbin and charges quicker.

The elegant RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 in most purposes, as it has a longer battery life, can change its suction power mode on its own and comes with physical boundary strips, and can be operated by your phone's voice assistant. It's also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and can perform better on low-pile and bare floors.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a name that you see on all sorts of electronic gadgets for your home It's no surprise that they're one of the top robot vacuum and mop manufacturers. Jet Bot AI+ has a cutting-edge onboard technology for navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app offers a variety of customization options for your robotic cleaner. This includes virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior customizations, docking frequency settings and more. It's easy to understand and automatic hoover Robot user-friendly, as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our tests of the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors, and also handled dog hair (on carpet) quite well, cleaning up 86% of it. It was not as successful in avoiding taller objects like socks or cords. This was disappointing. It's also more expensive than the other models we've tested, and this could be a deal breaker for certain shoppers.

The smart vacuum comes with an onboard camera that is accessible through the app, and you can also set up a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. This feature lets you check in on your children or pets while you're away. The dustbin and the filter can be washed for the quick and easy cleaning. The Jet Bot AI+ comes with an automatic hoover robot clean station which helps to keep the bin clean and optimizes suction power.

6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum

Black and Decker robots have been developed specifically for hard flooring. The robots come with an extra-wide cleaning path and dust bins that are 2X bigger than the competitors. This lets them keep the area clean for longer. Plus, they include two side sweepers to clean around edges and corners. The POWERSERIES Extreme model also includes AutoSense technology, which can tell if it's picking up dirt on surfaces or embedded dirt and automatically adjusts the power level. It also includes a smart application that lets you see the virtual map and control the functions and schedules. You can also monitor the vacuum's status and send it to its dock for charging with the press of a single button. The app lets you alter the LED lights on the top of the vacuum to discern where it is focusing or if it's stuck.

The app makes it possible to manually steer the robot when needed. For instance, my living room rug has a darkly-colored border that tends to trip up some of the other robots I've tested. However, the HRV 425BL continued to move across the border, without registering it as an incline. The ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving convenience.
