Adult women with ADHD have daily challenges. They are often misdiagnosed and ignored because many doctors consider ADD as a disorder that affects men and boys. Many ADD symptoms in females change in response to hormones. They are more apparent when you reach puberty, but they decrease as estrogen levels decrease during PMS or perimenopausal.

Symptoms

Adult women with ADD are impatient, easily irritated and impulsive. They tend to take on projects without planning or considering the implications like careers or relationships. Some also have sensitivity to rejection which makes it hard to handle the real or perceived rejection. These women are more likely to engage in sexually dangerous actions than women in adhd who don't suffer from ADD, such as early sex, casual sex, multiple partners and unprotected pregnancies. Depression can coexist with or is a result of ADD and must be treated equally. ADD symptoms are more noticeable in girls during puberty, PMS, and as estrogen levels decrease during perimenopausal and menopause.

Diagnosis

While ADD symptoms in women are similar to those of men, doctors could miss the diagnosis because of incorrect assumptions that ADD is more prevalent in boys. Women who suffer from ADD are more emotional than other women, especially when they enter puberty, experience PMS, or enter perimenopause or menopause. They may be impulsive, jumping into things without planning. Depression is often a co-existing attention deficit disorder in adult women or a result.
