The Q5 Pro, and its more expensive sibling the Q7 Max Series are among the most powerful robotic vacuums we have examined. They are equipped with top-of-the-line motors which can pull up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. Similar to other iRobots that are premium (including the most powerful model), they use smart mapping to produce precise floorplans that avoid obstacles like cords and furniture leg. The robots also have a feature called Carpet Boost that boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our bare floor tests They're also particularly adept at cleaning pet hair. There are some issues however, which hinder them from being our first option. One of the Q5's shortcomings is that its navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's also prone to become stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate rooms with lots of people efficiently during our tests. It also doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of the room.

It's still a great option for those who want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can be used while you're at work, or school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on very well and can't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with self-emptying docks, however. And, if you have to, you can switch the mopping pad to dry ones in just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a compact, sleek package. Its obstacle detection was excellent, and it avoided fake dog turds, socks, shoes, and bundles of cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after it vacuums it, something hasn't been seen in other robot vacuum/mop combos.

It's the only robotic cleaner and mop mop or vacuum that scored 100% in our evaluations, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors that include a camera, structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It comes with an easy mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit that could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or at night as you try to fall asleep.

The smart robot makes use of an array of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its more expensive competitors. It also has a camera mounted on the front to detect hazards in real-time however, it wasn't foolproof in our testing and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. For larger houses it's recommended to choose a model with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean one particular area of your house using the app or voice controls. If you have lots of furniture, a stairway mode is also a good option. Also, a recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price suggests. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with only one pad and a rotating motion which is cleaner than the majority of the robot mop cleaners that we've tried. It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured application and an auto-emptying washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through an exercise in mapping which collects information about your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, plan the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritize your most filthy rooms for better performance. The app also gives access to a variety of features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.
