Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it could increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Upgrades to gear in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's base stats increases when it is upgraded. This value is the sum of all of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly, depending on the upgrader you choose and the kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the variety of perks that must be changed in order to upgrade an item.

The level of an item is a widely used measure of power, and can be found on all item tooltips. It also serves to limit how much PvP gear players can wear as PvP is restricted at lower levels. Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.

Using the item level can help players compare the potency of gear when choosing to buy or sell. It's an indicator of the item's condition and its quality. The item level can also be used to compare items when evaluating a vendor's inventory.

On your PC, you can check the level of the item by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including the ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are a variety of theories on how the level of an item is determined. One theory states that the level of an item is calculated by a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats actually are. It is based on the fact that different advantages are valued differently and that gems in sockets increase the item's value. This can result in an item's ilvl calculated, which is usually very close to Blizzard's real item level.

However, this is not the only factor that determines the ilvl of an item, as the size of the area the item is dropped into can change the value of its stats, such as by adding an additional level to its haste or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have higher ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major part of what determines the value of an item for players. The game uses them in various ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to a single weapon and to encourage them to try out other weapons. The stats of a base weapon are increased by the weapon's stat modifications, which are themselves boosted by the player's level.

Upgrades to the item add by boosting certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item upgrading determines the upgrade cost. A white or grey item, for example, will only be upgraded one time, while an item that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times with higher prices.

Another method of altering the stats of an item is by affixing it. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and they come in all sizes and shapes. The affixes can provide the item additional damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving the dead or decreasing the cooldowns), or make the item unique by putting a special name to the item.

All affixes are being re-rolled right now by selecting them in the upgrade window pressing the green button. This process will cost the player a certain amount of gold and other items that can be added to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as the other rerolling options.

In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may also choose which of the available stats to be kept on an item when it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges of an item are determined by the level of the item, but all items are guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within that range, unless it is an item that is unique or an item that is a God roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could be altered by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes or choosing which stats to increase. But, like base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't show all possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player can increase the probability of obtaining items and the properties that are created by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It merely gives players the chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game and is therefore more valuable in the early game than later ones because most players value greater weapon scaling and defense over the raw damage gain.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each item level. These can also be increased with the use of anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons come with a default Luck value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant an additional +40 Luck or to boost the Luck of the item up to 140.

Certain items, such as the Hollow-infused weapon can also be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any ability that causes damage by 5percent. These items can be purchased in the shop or crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their items if it does not work.

The success rate of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of completing the upgrade successfully and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased as much, and the likelihood that an upgrade item will fail can't exceed 100%.

The Luck of an item can also influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. Each item has an average success rate of 25 percent, and each item that has Luck increases this chance by 5%.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory, so enchantment glint and other effects may be obstructed by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
