Door Knobs

The handles on your doors will enhance the look of your home and make it easier for you to shut and open them. They come in a variety of finishes, colors and styles to complement your decor. If yours are starting to begin to show signs of wear or just need an upgrade replacing them is simple and can be done in a couple of steps.

The first thing you have to do is locate the spindle or shaft through the knob's attachment to the door. Some knobs have a tiny opening that you can use a screwdriver to remove the set screws that keep the handle in place. Some have a small slot or hole through which you can use to press a spring-activated detent pin with flathead. When you press this pin it opens the latch mechanism and allows you to pull or push the knob.

Once you have access to the shaft or spindle take off the door knob and replace it with the new one. Check that the latch is working properly before tightening the set screws.

Once you've replaced the knob, hold the latch rod in position over the door's hole and lock it in place with the rod mechanism on the second knob. Make sure the holes are lined up then thread the latch plate screws and tighten them.

Some prefer the smooth or brushed finish for their door hardware to create an elegant, modern look that complements other furniture in their homes. Others prefer a more rustic design that is a good match for spaces that are reminiscent of farmhouse. If you have one of your family members with mobility issues, you may prefer a lever style or rim lock, which requires less pressure to operate.

Other factors are being looked at more and more when it comes to the design of door replacement upvc window handles. Accessibility and control of infections are key issues that have led to the development of new designs for handle double glazing handles including ones that can be operated with the forearm of a person.

Latch

The latch that holds the handle of your door open will wear down over time. It is easy to change the latch on your door handle. This will make huge differences in how it opens and closes.

Depending on the kind of knob you are using, the latch may be part of the knob itself or it could be an individual piece that is attached to the door itself. In either case, the same process for removing and installing will apply. It's easy to remove the old latch, particularly if you have an entry handle that has a "magic" button. This tiny pressure-slot, found on the side knob is what you need to press in order to remove the latch of the handle.

If your handle does not have this magic button you'll need to remove the cover plates placed over the latch plate. They are typically rectangular or circular and can be removed by using a screwdriver in order to remove them off of the handle. Some have a small slot in them where you can slide your screwdriver into, while others snap off.

The next step is to remove the two machine screws that secure the latch and the inner plate to the door handle. These are the shorter screws with a pointy tip - you will have to store them in a safe place to reuse them in subsequent steps. Once the screws are removed you can pull the latch plate and mechanism out of the door's hole and place it in a safe place.

You can now begin installing the new latch. Insert the inside plate of the latch into the hole in the door, and secure it using the provided hardware. Make sure the square pin that is on the interior of the latch is facing the mechanism for latching inside the handle and that it lines up with the other screw chambers of the door handle. Then push the exterior latch plate on and secure it using the provided screws.

Strike Plate

It is not uncommon to replace a door handle because it feels loose, or isn't locking properly. This is typically caused by malfunctioning parts of the latching system, for example the strike plate being too small or has moved upwards or downward on the doorjamb with time. This project lets you replace your old strikeplate with a more substantial one, which will provide better security for your door and ensure it stays closed.

To determine if the issue is caused by the strike plate, apply some lipstick or similar marking material on the latch bolt. Close the door and attempt to latch it. If the mark is below the strike plate's hole, it indicates that the plate is too small and the door will not latch. If the mark is above the strike plate hole, it's likely that the strike plate has been moved up or down on the doorjamb.

You may be able simply to screw the new strikeplate into place over the one you have already installed using the screws that come with it, based on the door. You may need to drill holes first and then chisel the wood to ensure a secure fit. If this is the case, be cautious not to chisel too much or you may damage the integrity of your doorjamb.

You could also try installing a new strike plate which gives the sash lock door handles a much more secure grip on the door and requires more force to open it. Typically, it requires two longer screws to secure the strike plate to the door frame. You'll have remove the old strike plate before drilling and chiseling the wood to make room for the new one.
