The i3+ is an excellent option for those looking for a an automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but are willing to manually empty the robot's dustbin after it has filled up.

Both robots are proficient at removing surface dirt on carpets and hard floors, and they can easily navigate around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes a smart maps of your home that assist the i3+ to navigate and clean efficiently. However, unlike the i7+ or other top rated robots we test the i3+ does not have any obstacle-avoidance features, so it may be stuck on things like socks or power cords, and it may have trouble navigating across surface transitions like from hardwood to carpet.

iRobot suggests that you clear areas where the i3+ EVO will vacuum prior to when you use it, including putting away any toys or clutter it might encounter. It's also recommended to keep the dust bin and filter clear so they don't become clogged with dirt. When the i3+ EVO's internal bin is filled or the battery is low, it returns to its docking station, automatically emptying its debris into the station's external dustbin and continues cleaning where it began. The i3+ EVO's batteries last for about an hour and a half of continuous use, and takes around three hours to recharge.

2. Roomba by iRobot

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model in iRobot's flagship line and is equipped with the most recent features. It's self-charging, self-navigating, and the most crucial feature of all -- it comes with best self cleaning vacuum-emptying bins that eliminate one of the primary sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ can remember up to 10 floor plans and their names using Imprint Smart Mapping, an application that lets it create maps of rooms so that it can clean them more efficiently. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and control your best robot vacuum using voice or through the app.

The i7+ is more efficient and more agile in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also removed large pet hair pieces from all surfaces, including carpeting. Its greatest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying garbage bin that eliminates the main sources of maintenance and reduces the cost of maintenance.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services which we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning sessions and to move around the room and sweep a specific space. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. We were able, once connected, to speak commands to the i7+, such as "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world of cordless vacs that look like minivans or buses, this small Dyson model feels like an old-fashioned sports car. It's powerful enough to replace a stand-up vacuum in a majority of homes, but it is also compact enough to fit on a coffee table or bookcase.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell, high-energy lithium-ion battery that can provide continuous, non-fading power for 60 minutes. The advanced whole-machine filtering system is able to trap allergens and then lets cleaner air into your home. The cleaning head is specially designed to drive stiff nylon bristles deep into carpet to suck up large crumbs and fine dust. It comes with three suction modes to meet the task at hand. It quickly converts from handheld to floor vacuum, and then back to floor.

This model has an attached dock that charges the Dyson to 100% in 3.5 hours. It also offers an easy access to two attachments as well as the wand. This is a huge improvement over older Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The V10's biggest drawback is its limited run time. The claims of its marketing that it can provide up to 60 minutes of running time are not true as CR's tests have shown. This is an average, not an exceptional, run time for a battery-powered cordless vac. That's still enough run time to clean most of a home that's average size but not long enough to cover every area (though a second run-through usually will suffice). However, this model isn't a good choice: It's lighter and agile than older cordless Dysons, and its vacuuming performance is noticeably superior on carpets with a low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

One of iRobot's most popular best robot vacuum for the money vacuums the 694 is an affordable model that's an excellent choice for people who don't want to spend too much on a robot. It was able to remove the majority of types of debris in our tests and would often go over the same area multiple times to give an extensive clean. Its flat front end helps to get into corners and along the walls' edges and walls, which is a nice touch.

Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate your home, but it isn't equipped with the ability to map that comes with more sophisticated models such as our top choices, the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. It can get stuck on phone cords or low furniture and often runs out of power before returning to its home base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in most respects because it has fewer parts that need regular cleaning, is fitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, has lower recurring costs, comes with more advanced automation capabilities and does a better job maneuvering itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and is charged faster.

The sleek RoboVac X8 has a superior battery longevity than the Roomba 694. It also comes with physical boundaries and can be controlled by the voice assistant on your smartphone. It also feels better-built and has a stronger motor, and is able to perform better on both bare floors and carpets with a low pile, as well as providing a wider array of automation options.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

In our tests our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors, and also handled dog hair (on carpet) quite well, cleaning up 86% of it. It was not as successful in avoiding taller objects like cords or socks. This was disappointing. It's also more expensive than other models that we tested, and this could be a deal breaker for some shoppers.

The app allows you to access the onboard camera of the smart vacuum. You can also create live streaming from the robot's area of cleaning. This feature lets you monitor your pets or kids when you're away from home. The filter and the dustbin can be cleaned for the quick and easy cleaning. The Jet Bot AI+ also comes with a clean and tidy station that's self-emptying and helps keep the robot's trash bin clean and maximizes suction power for each cleaning run.

6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum

Black and Decker robots are designed specifically for hard flooring. The robots have an extra-wide cleaning path, and dust bins that are 2 times larger than other models. This lets them keep the area clean for longer. They also have two side sweepers that can be used to clean along edges and corners. The POWERSERIES model includes AutoSense that automatically adjusts the power level based on whether it is collecting surface dirt or embedded dirt. The vacuum also has an app that allows you to view an interactive map, control functions, and create schedules. You can also monitor the status of the vacuum's battery and send it back to its dock for charging at the touch of the button. The app lets you alter the LED lights on the top of the vacuum to discern where it is focusing or if it's stuck.

The application also allows you to steer the robot manually in the event of need. For example, my living room rug has a darkly-colored border that has a tendency to trip up some of the other robots I've tested. However the HRV 425BL continued to move across the border, without registering it as a cliff. The ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule is a wonderful time-saving benefit.
