The best robot hoover can mop and vacuum without needing your attention, and leaves your floors spotless. Its affordable price and high-end features (such as dirt detector) are both positives.

1. Roomba Q5 Pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling, the pricier Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've tested. They are equipped with top-of-the-line motors which can pull up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. As with other top iRobot models (including the top-rated model) they utilize intelligent mapping technology to create detailed floor plans that avoid home-based obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also come with Carpet Boost, a feature which boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our bare floor tests, and they're particularly adept in cleaning pet hair. However, they have a few flaws that keep them from being our top choice. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on shoes and socks and can't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.

However, it's a good robot vacuum choice to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also quiet and works while you're at work or school. The only thing it lacks that you don't get in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective in mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle however. If you want to, you can switch the mopping pad for a dry one in just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into an elegant, compact package. Its nimble navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it simple to clean and effective at dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also has self-emptying dustbins as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, although it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mops utilizes sensor technology that can avoid obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the structure of your home over time to provide more efficient cleaning. It is able to clean floors even after it vacuums. This is something we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba than the competition's boxy units this mop and robot automatic vacuum cleaner is among the most attractive designs in our reviews. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It features advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the only robot vacuum or mop that scored the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our tests. This is due to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured light system, camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it has an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has an easy mobile app interface that integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only downside is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This could be a problem in mornings before work or during the night when you're trying to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, although it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally capable and more attractive. If you're willing some more volume and a little more cost it's a powerful two-in-one that will satisfy most people.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features that will let you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take the care of mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot uses the combination of LIDAR and structured light to create the floor plan and detect obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its top rivals. It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time hazard detection but this was not 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to get the job done. It also comes with an option called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the home based on how dirty the areas tend to be.

If you have a bigger home, it's worth selecting a robot that comes with the option of cleaning zones or spots. This allows you to instruct the robot on which part of your home must be cleaned with the help of an app or voice command. If you have furniture, a stair-mode is also useful. Also, a recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum cleaner uk vacuum pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you would expect from its price tag. It is a great job vacuuming, picking up 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion that is cleaner than the other robot vacuum cleaner uk mop cleaners we've tried. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and a self-emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to set up the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for greater efficiency. The app also provides access to a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It is excellent at vacuuming, but it's more likely to get caught on low thresholds. It also has a higher noise than other top robot vacuums we have examined. It also has a less user-friendly app and a small base station that isn't able to double as an emptying bin.
