Many models do a decent job of picking up dust embedded in low-pile carpet and a few are capable of cleaning up larger debris such as orzo pasta, metal screws, and pet hair. However, they aren't able to pick up fine particles like canister or upright vacuums and can miss ground-in dirt close to thresholds and baseboards.

Best for Hard Flooring

Robot vacuums are the best robot vacuum for tile floors choice for floors with hardwood floors because they can maneuver around obstacles easily without damaging floors that aren't. They are fantastic for removing dust and crumbs, but struggle with pet hair and larger debris. They lack the suction power of an expensive upright or canister vacuum, so they're not the best option for rooms with carpets or deep cleaning upholstery.

The most effective two-in-one robots incorporate mopping and vacuum to complete a more complete chore in one go. Find a model that has an onboard sensor that detects changes in the floor texture and adjust suction to match. A few years ago, robot vacuums went through a major change when manufacturers started adding sensors to help them navigate around and avoid household objects that their conventional sensors would be stuck on or over. These advancements decreased the amount of times our testers had to clean up after a robotic snag whether it was a power cord, a toy or pet waste.

The new sensors don't solve all the problems with these devices however. The cheaper models are still not able to tackle the same obstacles as older models, and they require an adequate amount of light to be able to see where they are moving. If you live in a dark house or have lots of low-profile furniture, consider getting one that uses top-mounted spinning LIDAR units to map your space, as our top overall and runner-up picks do. This allows them to work in darkness and avoid obstacles like stairs.

These models can be programmed to only use their cliff sensors only when they are in or near the ground, and not when they are above it. It's essential to cover mirrors to prevent this from occurring. The lasers used by LIDAR-based models can bounce off reflective surfaces, making the robot think it's in a different space.
